This guide to resources for students of history is a listing, by categories, of bibliographies, indexes, and other basic reference sources. It provides library call numbers and other information to allow users to find the materials in the Ned McWherter Library at The University of Memphis. The call numbers are usually Library of Congress numbers, so the guide may be useful in other libraries as well.
As the title indicates, I prepared the guide for use in History 7000/8000, Introduction to Historical Research and Writing, a graduate-level course that I taught for many years. For most of those years, it was available only to students currently enrolled in the course, but at the suggestion of several persons I published it to the Web for anyone who wishes to use it. Originally, it existed only in a PDF version. I have now created an HTML version.
PLEASE NOTE: History 7000/8000 was offered for the last time in the Fall Semester 2007, and the guide reflects the Library's holdings at that time. The course is no longer offered, so I will not update the guide in the future. But because the Library's holdings in history change slowly, the guide should continue to be of some use for the next few years, and I will keep it on my Web site indefinitely.
In PDF, the guide is available in either complete form or in individual sections. The files require Adobe Reader (available free from Adobe Systems, Inc.). In HTML, the guide is available only in complete form.
